The euro-JPY exchange rate stabilized after falling for two consecutive days, and trading around 172.15 in the early trading session on Thursday (August 21). The currency pair has limited fluctuations after the release of HCOB Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) data in Germany and the euro zone.
HCOB Germany's initial xmmarkets.cnprehensive output value in August was 50.9 (previous value 50.6, expected 50.2), a five-month high. The manufacturing PMI improved from the previous 49.1 to 49.9, exceeding the market expectations of 48.8. The service industry PMI fell to 50.1 (expected 50.3, previous value of 50.6).

Short-term price momentum is enhanced - the euro breaks through the 9-day index moving average (EMA) (172.00).
If it effectively falls below the lower track of the upward channel, market sentiment may turn bearish, and the euro against the Japanese yen may be under pressure to hit the 50-day index moving average (170.35), which will then test the seven-week low of 169.72 set on July 31.If the downside continues, the pair may further test the two-month low of 168.46 recorded on July 1.
In the upward trend, the initial resistance is at the recent high of 172.40. Breaking through this key resistance area will inspire bullish sentiment and push the exchange rate to hit the high of 173.90 since July 2024 set on July 28, 2025, and then challenge the pressure level near 174.50 of the upper track of the upward channel.
