Silver (XAG/USD) experienced a period of fluctuation on Thursday, reversing its previous uptrend during the early trading session of the U.S. The metal is backed by widespread weakness in the dollar, which has intensified after President Trump’s new round of criticism of Fed Chairman Powell.
Silver fell from its intraday high of $36.84, with XAG/USD trading around $36.40 at the time of writing. The pullback xmmarkets.cnes after a series of key U.S. economic data released, which triggered some intraday volatility.
The U.S. economy contracted 0.5% in the first quarter of 2025, the first quarterly decline in three years, with consumer spending and exports being significantly lowered. Meanwhile, the number of initial jobless claims fell by 9,000 last week to 236,000, showing the resilience of the labor market. On the other hand, the U.S. factory orders surged by 16.4% month-on-month in May, far exceeding expectations, while the xmmarkets.cnmodity trade deficit widened to $96.6 billion, indicating that external pressure has increased again. Although the overall macroeconomic situation suggests a slowdown, the resilience of certain data points has triggered profit-taking from silver.
At the same time, basic demand for silver remains supported by strong investment inflows and industrial use. Silver-backed holdings of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have risen steadily in recent days, reflecting the renewed interest of institutional and retail investors in the Fed's expectations for a rate cut later this year. Meanwhile, the net speculative long positions of xmmarkets.cnEX silver futures are still at a high level, highlighting the bullish sentiment in the market. In terms of industry, demand is mainly caused by solar energy and electric vehiclesDriven by strong industry activity. The continued supply shortage in the physical silver market further supports the bullish outlook, keeping the downward trend within a shallow and controllable range.
From a technical point of view, silver (XAG/USD) is still in the consolidation phase after approaching $37.00 last week. The metal briefly tested the lower boundary of the rising wedge pattern on Wednesday and successfully stayed above it, temporarily maintaining a broader bullish structure. XAG/USD is currently trading at $36.40, well above the 21-day index moving average (EMA) $35.66, which continues to serve as dynamic support.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is 61.47, indicating that the bullish momentum is still there, but it begins to weaken, without an immediate overbought signal. The average true amplitude (ATR) is 0.79, showing a reduction in volatility, reflecting the integration state.
The 10-day momentum indicator measures the price change rate and has stabilized around zero, indicating that short-term traders' directional confidence has weakened. If it falls below the wedge support level, silver may pull back to the $35.00–34.80 area, and if it continues to break above $36.85, it will pave the way for a retest of the recent years highs close to $37.40.
