The gold price (XAU/USD) was consolidates around $3,325 during the European trading session on Wednesday. The precious metal fluctuated in the trading range on Tuesday, and the outlook seems uncertain as investors continue to increase their bets on risky assets after Israel and Iran announced a ceasefire on Tuesday.
Easing geopolitical tensions often lead to a decline in demand for safe-haven assets, such as gold.
The U.S. President posted on Truth.Social on Wednesday that Israel and Iran have reached a ceasefire and urged both sides not to violate the ceasefire agreement.
At the same time, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell expressed disappointment at the hopes of a rate cut in July's monetary policy meeting, which also puts pressure on gold prices.
Powell said the central bank was “in a good position to wait for more information about the possible direction of the economy before considering any adjustments to our policy stance.” Powell noted that the central bank will closely monitor “the impact of the tariffs imposed by President Trump on inflation until the data in June and July.” He added that if the data showed that the tariffs had an impact on inflation was not as large as the Fed had previously expected, he would support an earlier rate cut.
Theoretically, the Fed's high interest rates for a long time are not good for non-yield assets such as gold.
Gold Technical Analysis
Gold price forms an ascending triangle on the daily chart, indicating a contraction of volatility. The horizontal resistance line for the above graph is drawn at the April 22 high of about $3,500, while the upward tilt trend line is from April 7The daily low is drawn at $2,957.
The precious metals traded below the 20-day index moving average (EMA), indicating that the short-term trend has turned bearish.
The 14th-day relative strength index (RSI) fluctuates within the range of 40.00-60.00, indicating a sideways trend.
Looking upward, gold prices will enter unknown territory after decisively breaking through the $3,500 psychological mark. Potential resistance levels are $3,550 and $3,600.
In contrast, if gold falls below the May 29 low of $3,245, it will drag it toward the integer support of $3,200, followed by May 15 low of $3,121.
