The Swiss Franc (CHF) strengthened against the US dollar (USD) on Tuesday, continuing Monday's rally as geopolitical tensions eased after Iran and Israel reached a ceasefire agreement. Although the ceasefire has been announced and widely accepted, the situation remains fragile and highly tense, with Iran and Israel accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. This ongoing uncertainty has kept investors cautious and maintained demand for traditional safe haven currencies such as the Swiss franc, even as immediate concerns about a wider escalation have diminished.
Reflecting this caution, the USD/CHF pair hovered above its lowest level since 2011 and is currently trading near 0.8052 during the U.S. trading session, although it has not yet broken through this long-term low. The weakening of the dollar and ongoing safe-haven demand for the Swiss franc continue to put pressure on the pair, despite recent measures by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to curb currency strength by resuming its zero-rate policy.
Last week, the Swiss National Bank made headlines for its sixth consecutive rate cut, lowering its key policy interest rates back to zero, policymakers shifted from fighting inflation to dealing with emerging deflation risks. Recent data show that consumer prices slipped into negative annualized values, partly because strong Swiss francs made imported goods cheaper. After ending a positive borrowing cost period of less than three years, the Swiss National Bank promised to "adjust our monetary policy if necessary." However, Bloomberg's survey shows that there are differences among forecasters: Of the 16 forecasters, only seven expected Swiss National Bank to push interest rates into negative areas at their upcoming meetings in September or December, while the rest did not expect further changes. This shows that the Swiss National Bank is not in a hurry at the momentIn the further interest rate cut, this position continues to support the resilience of the Swiss franc.
Telections from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell strengthened a cautious but open attitude towards U.S. monetary policy amid the weakening of the dollar. He stressed that the Fed needs “more confidence in sustained inflation moving towards 2%” to cut interest rates, but noted that “many paths are possible”, including a possible cut in July if inflation slows faster than expected. Powell also stressed that the Fed "will not hesitate to take action" if there are signs of tension in the labor market.
Supporting this view is that Fed Vice Chairman Michelle Bowman and Director Christopher Waller have sent a more dovish signal, Bowman points out “encouraging signs” of inflation progress, and Waller warns that “it will be unwise to wait too long” if economic conditions show signs of slowing. Their earlier remarks helped shape market expectations for near-term policy easing.
