USD/JPY rises sharply, risk appetite suppresses safe-haven yen

The US dollar/JPY currency pair was traded around 148.00, with an intraday increase of about 2%, as risk appetite dominated the global market after a major breakthrough in U.S.-China trade relations. Over the weekend, the two major economies reached a 90-day tariff reduction agreement, with the United States reducing tariffs on Chinese imported goods from 145% to 30%, and China reducing tariffs from 125% to 10%. This temporary downgrade triggered a rebound in risky assets, putting pressure on traditional safe-haven currencies such as the Japanese yen.

The dollar rose sharply due to a trade truce, supported by a sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to 4.45%, reflecting a decrease in expectations for the recent Fed rate cut. Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY) rose more than 1.25% to 101.74, the highest level in a month, further pressure on the yen. Federal Reserve Director Adriana Kugler pointed out that although tariff cuts are a positive development, the long-term impact on global supply chains remains uncertain, which xmmarkets.cnplicates the Fed's assessment of the strength of the U.S. economy.

In Japan, the latest data shows that Japan's current account surplus in March was 2.723 trillion yen, exceeding the expected 2.465 trillion yen. This trend underscores the caution of Japanese institutional investors in the context of active trade development.

Technical Analysis

The US dollar/JPY sends a bullish signal, trading around 148.00, with an increase of about 2% today, close to the top of its intraday rangeDepartment (145.69–148.65). The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is around 60, indicating a neutral state, while the moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) shows buying momentum. Further confirmation of neutral momentum, bull and bear forces are trading around 5, strong oscillators also show neutral status, and the final oscillators (7,14,28) are around 60.

The 20-day simple moving average (SMA) supports the buy signal, while the 100-day and 200-day SMAs suggest selling, reflecting the long-term prospects of the mix. Both the 10-day index moving average (EMA) and the 10-day SMA hover around 140, consistent with overall bullish sentiment.

Key support levels are around 146.45, 146.29 and 145.69, while resistance levels are around 149.56, 149.62 and 150.37. A breakthrough of 149.60 may suggest further gains, while a break below 146.30 may open the door for a deeper correction.
