GBP/USD breaks through 1.3350, traders prepare for Fed and Bank of England's interest rate decisions

The pound rose for the second consecutive day, rising by more than 0.65% against the US dollar, amid scarcity of economic data on both sides of the Atlantic. Major central banks such as the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England (BoE) are preparing for their policy meetings. As of press time, GBP/USD was traded at 1.3381, not far from the 1.34 mark.

The pound/dollar rose slightly against the backdrop of light data, widening US trade deficit and rising central bank easing expectations

News related to US trade continued to occupy the headlines. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said the United States is negotiating with 17 trading partners, but has not yet negotiated with China. He said some deals could be announced this week.

In terms of data, the U.S. trade deficit widened in March, driven by businesses importing goods before President Trump imposed tariffs. The U.S. Department of xmmarkets.cnmerce revealed that the trade balance was -140 billion US dollars, exceeding the expected -137 billion US dollars, and exceeding the -123.2 billion US dollars in February. Traders prepare for the Fed and Bank of England meetings

On Wednesday, the Fed is expected to keep interest rates unchanged, but traders will pay attention to a post-conference press conference by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. One day later, the Bank of England is expected toE) Will cut interest rates by 25 basis points, which will give the Fed the upper hand in interest rate differences.

Nevertheless, interest rate parity is expected to remain unchanged throughout the year. The market expects the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by 75 basis points, the same as the Bank of England.

GBP/USD Price Forecast: Technical Outlook

The upward trend of GBP/USD is still continuing, but a "head and shoulders top" chart pattern may appear, as buyers seem to lose some momentum as they approach 1.34. If the daily closing is above this level, it may retest the year-to-date (YTD) high of 1.3443, thereby negating the bearish chart pattern of "head and shoulders top".

In contrast, if GBP/USD falls below 1.3300, you need to pay attention to the latest test of the swing low of 1.3257 on May 5. If the breakthrough is made, this could be the first sign of a “head and shoulders top” confirmation and pave the way for testing lower prices. The recent support is 1.3200, followed by the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) at 1.3030.
